Project Description: This $2.5million grant is to extend the work of the previous grant given in 2008.

This grant will go towards the construction of The Kinghorn Cancer Centre, a joint facility of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney. The Centre, one of Australia’s finest research centres, will provide national leadership in translational research and facilitate the development of personalised cancer treatment.

The ACRF grant honours the late Lady (Sonia) McMahon, life member and one of two joint founders of the Foundation (the other being the late Sir Peter Abeles). Lady McMahon passed away earlier this year at St Vincent’s Hospital after a long battle with cancer.

Expected benefits:

The centre will support multidisciplinary teams for the holistic and ultimately improved care of patients throughout their cancer treatment and foster the highest level of collaboration between researchers and clinical investigators. The Garvan group is seen as one of the best basic breast cancer biology research groups in Australia. It has a strong commitment to translational research in breast cancer and other cancers.

Types of Cancer : breast, prostate, ovarian, pancreatic, colorectal, head and neck, lung and others.
