City2Surf: join the cancer research dream team

2010 City2Surf team off and running

The Australian Cancer Research Foundation’s own “Three Amigas” are in final preparations for the upcoming City2Surf marathon on August 8.

Staffers Claire McArthur, Natasha Khema and Mahsa Lotfizadeh say that rather than just encourage runners taking part in the event this year on behalf of the Australian Research Foundation, they wish to show solidarity by taking part themselves.

“We just don’t want to just talk the talk, we want to walk the walk,” said Claire who added that she had purchased some “lovely new runners” for the event.

Cancer research supporters can also expect a unique experience from the team as they provide real time updates along the 14km route through the Foundation’s Twitter account.

Claire is the community fundraising coordinator at ACRF and says people who have been touched by cancer are showing support and joining their City2Surf team:

“Many are supporting cancer research in memory of those who have sadly lost their battle with cancer, but many also in celebration of beating cancer and achieving remission.”

Supporters can get behind the girls by sponsoring them on the ACRF’s Everyday Hero Online Fundraising Page or joining them on the day.

Team member, Natasha, says this is the first time any of them will participate in the City2Surf, but are looking forward to a fun and worthwhile day.

So far the girls have not done too much formal training but plan to ramp it up over the coming weeks, even discussing fitness and training strategies.

“I drove the length of the course the other weekend, and I visualised myself jogging along the track” said Mahsa (smiling), “that seemed like a pretty good start to me.”

“Maybe a couple of group walks around the Botanical Gardens after work?” suggested Claire, “I did do the ‘Fairlight to Spit’ walk the other day, so at least I now know I can make the distance.”

The team has already been overwhelmed with tremendous support from individuals and groups taking part in the race to help raise money for cancer research.

Advertising agency M&C Saatchi, led by charismatic employee Hannah, has already signed up to run for ACRF, and the ADHC staff team ‘ADHC Diamonds’, featuring colleagues Eugene, Anne and Tamara, are already well under way with their training and gathering new supporters every day.

Also on board for this year’s run are a “Team TDT” including Dylan, Cassie, Ty and Tim, who joke they plan to “run” in their first City2surf and by run we mean “jog (or brisk walk).”

Plus many many more wonderful individual participants and supporter teams.

The girls are getting super-excited for the day, and would love for you to join in….
