Cancer cure – serious side to a fun day

AN AFTERNOON of fun and fine food yesterday had a serious side, with patrons aiding research into a cure for cancer.

The Launceston Cancerians Committee hosted its fourth annual Wining And Dining For A Cure at Hadspen’s historic Entally Estate, with 180 people giving their support.

Committee secretary Trudi Johnston said all of the $6000 raised at this year’s event would go to the Australian Cancer Research Foundation.

“With all the charity fundraising that is going on at the moment we were expecting about 150 people, so we’re very happy with 180,” Mrs Johnston said.

Mrs Johnston said Australian Cancer Research Foundation representative Jennifer Coffey had travelled from Sydney to attend the event.

“Her words were very good,” Mrs Johnston said.

“She spoke about how cancer is immune to the global financial crisis, and it was good to see a lot of support from everyone wanting to put their bit back into charity.”

Professor Simon Foote, of the Menzies Centre, also spoke at the event and highlighted how funding from the ACRF had been used at the centre.

The event included Tasmanian produce served by the Tasmanian Gourmet Kitchen and entertainment by double act Jon and Col.
